CEDAR FALLS - Ten Cherokee Washington High band students, under the direction of Joe Vannatta, were accepted to the Northern Festival of Bands Saturday for the 61st Honor Band Festival held on the UNI campus.
Cherokee WHS students who participated in the recent Northern Festival of Honor Bands at UNI included, front row, left to right, Alisanne Struck, Kinsey Voss, Fran Conley, and Emma VandeLune. Middle, Courtney Aden, Clare Conley and Alexa Timmerman. Back, Chandler Hohbach, Dusty Wright, Mason Timmerman.
Also accepted for the band was Olivia Dagel, who was unable to participate due to basketball commitments.
The popular Northern Festival annually receives more than 400 applications for this honor band with only 184 accepted. Those 184 are then separated into two 92- piece bands - the concert band for freshman and sophomores, and the symphony band for juniors and seniors.
After convening on Thursday and two days of rehearsals and an opportunity for private lessons, the bands performed an excellent concert for the public Saturday afternoon, playing four selections each under the direction of Dr. Richard Fischer of Concordia University in Chicago, and Dr. Lawrence Harper of Carroll University.
Thirty-six Iowa high schools were represented in this year's Honor Band Festival.
